Description: Navidi Architect provided architectural services for the design and construction of a new Early Learning and Childcare Centre for the Gwa’sala-’Nakwaxda’xw Nation in Port Hardy, British Columbia.
Developed in close collaboration with the Nation, the facility was designed to provide a safe, welcoming, and culturally responsive environment that supports early childhood education, family engagement, and community well-being. The project delivers a purpose-built childcare facility featuring a large open activity and learning space, dedicated administrative offices, kitchen and nutrition areas, children’s washrooms, accessible universal washroom facilities, support spaces, and direct access to secure outdoor play areas.
The building design emphasizes accessibility, safety, natural daylight, durability, and operational efficiency while creating flexible learning environments that encourage creativity, social development, and exploration. A covered exterior deck and accessible site circulation further strengthen the connection between indoor and outdoor learning experiences.
Designed in accordance with BCBC 2024 and childcare licensing requirements, the project required extensive coordination of architectural, structural, mechanical, electrical, civil, geotechnical, and surveying disciplines throughout design, permitting, and construction. Particular attention was given to accessibility, life-safety systems, occupant comfort, and long-term maintainability to support the Nation’s future childcare needs.
The project demonstrates NAI’s expertise in Indigenous community infrastructure, institutional design, childcare facilities, consultant coordination, and the delivery of meaningful community-focused buildings that serve future generations.
